IB HL VISUAL ARTS (2017 - 2018)
A series of video projects completed as part of International Baccalaureate programme for Higher Level Visual Arts.
As part of the graduation requirement, we are to create 8 - 11 pieces of artworks over the course of two years, including an extensive ideation portfolio write-up and and a curated exhibition of all the completed works.
Here are some of the core video works that I’ve made:
Traces
2016
Video
1:39 min, looped
Every action we take leaves behind a trace, tangible or not. The repetitive element - the waves - are indicative of the traces that we leave in our lives; they might cease to exist now, but they existed. Red strings are typically associated with the concept of fate in Chinese traditions.
Pilgrimage
2017
Video
3:07 min
In the modern context, living and growing up in a metropolis can be anagolous to the journey of a pilgrim. We all start off as a clean slate, and as we grow we are forced to adapt to the rhythm of city life. Often, the pace is so hasty that many become lost. What then, is the purpose of living, in an urban context? What is the purpose of seeking purpose?
Connect
2016
Video
1:37 min, looped
A visual allegory of one’s unrelenting journey in love, from a state of brokenness to wholesome and vice versa.
Engima
2016
Video
5:41 min
Inspired by Bill Viola’s renaissance-esque video works and through employing negative and empty spaces, this piece invites the audience to be in a meditative mood for deep reflection as they engage their attention with the figure. The fog is representative of the Chinese phrase 红尘 (red dust), which translates to ‘worldly affairs’.
Peregrination
2017
Video
1:17 min, looped
Life’s journey is perilous and never-ending. The subject walks on a Möbius Strip - a looped surface with only one side - to infinity, representative of the arduousness of life. The light and dark interplay from the shadows also creates an yin-yang harmony.
